 Vera Black has a unique heart-felt style of Folk/Soul/Rock..., as she puts it 'Modern Woodstock'.. that she blends into real music, touching on real issues. VERA BLACK is distinguished by her powerful soul/blues voice and her unique song writing style, she melts beautiful, soaring melodies with difficult subjects to create a musical journey akin to the greats before her. She sings about her life and experiences with maturity, depth and soul. This Sydney based artist started writing songs 10 years ago in her hometown of Perth WA and has gone from strength to strength since then, winning of 'Best Live Act' at the 2007 Musicoz Awards and being named as the woman to watch. Black has well and truly been making her mark on an international scale since returning from her first US Tour and winning the 'Show Me the Music' Songwriting Contest in Nashville, recording with some of the industry's top session players. Among her international accolades Black won 'Best Music Video' for her song 'Addictions', at the 2007 Digifestival in Florence, as well as being the closing act for the film festival. Black has recently written a song for the Australian feature film 'The Waiting City' filmed in India. The song 'The Beauty of Life' is performed by Isabel Lucas and Joel Edgerton who play musicians in the film, which debuted at the Toronto Film Festival. Her lyrics both witty and catchy profess the comments of a girl who doesn’t stumble on her words and declares to the world “I’m not here to be a princess, I’m here to be the Queen”,taken from the title track of her EP, The Queen. This is the slogan on her t-shirts, of which won ‘Best Swag’ at the IMA’s(USA). In 2005, Black spent 10 months in Sydney writing and recording her debut album 'SUPERSTITIOUS WOMAN'. The album fuses her blues, rock, gospel influences into an original, contemporary, groundbreaking sound. Each song has it's own unique style and story, and demonstrates her versatility and range as a vocal artist and writer. The cover of her debut album shot by her brother cinematographer Denson Baker ACS won ‘Best Album Art’ photography at the IMA’s(USA). Black Released 'The Queen' in 2008, a fully produced collection of songs produced by 3 different producers and co-produced by Black herself. Her 3rd release also in 2008 was 'The Stagedoor Sessions' a live album recorded with her of her and her 6 piece band, capturing what they do best ‘playing live’. Vera Black has performed in the Led Zeppelin tribute tour around NSW with some so Australia’s best musicians & vocalists. Digifestival Jury Member, Roli Mosimann (Producer of Faith No More, Smashing Pumpkins) said, “She impressed me most with her abilities and rare talent of transporting the emotional content of her music straight to the heart, without filters or distractions. She is not just singing a great song about a difficult subject, she is telling a story and lets you feel and participate in what it all means to her in a way only great musicians can do. Beware!
