He teaches a variety of music courses at Greensboro College in Greensboro, North Carolina, where he has been a full-time faculty member since 1996.
Mr. Fox performs as a classical and jazz pianist. Most recently he has been active as a composer and an improviser. In 2003 he performed the world premiere of “How the River Took Daughtry McLamb,” a song cycle for soprano, cello and piano, as well as several of his piano preludes. In April of 2004 he premiered the original composition “Quasi-Improvised Sonata for Banjo and Piano” with Eugene Chadbourne on banjo. Recently he completed a collection of piano pieces titled “Ancient Phrases” and will be performing those on recitals throughout 2009-10. In addition he has been performing with singer Melissa Reaves, having served as her musical director on a variety of projects.
Fox founded and curates the Greensboro College Music Department’s Improvising Music Series, which features guest artists and local musicians performing improvisational collaborations. Some of the notable performers on this series have been Frank Gratkowski, Martin Klapper, Numinous Opposum, Hannes Loeschel, Tara Flandreau, Carrie Schull, and Eugene Chadbourne.
Dave Fox is the leader of the quartet The Dave Fox Group. This exciting jazz ensemble has released three CDs (Gatewalk, 2004, and If These Songs Could Talk, 2007, and Home Again, 2008) to critical acclaim in such publications as AllAbout Jazz, Cadence, and Jazz Improv. The group performs frequently at colleges and festivals and are garnering a reputation as an eclectic and creative ensemble.
Fox's CD The Foxbourne Chronicles, with friend Eugene Chadbourne, was reviewed in Downbeat in 2007. He has also released a solo improvisation recording, Dedication Suite, and a collaborative recording with Frank Gratkowski, ORM. Mr. Fox was recently interviewed in JazzImprovNY (July, 2009) for their Piano Lovers Issue. When not teaching at Greensboro College, Mr. Fox spends his time composing and performing new music for a variety of instruments, including solo piano to small and large chamber groups. Critics have called him a “forward-thinking” composer (John Vincent, Jazz Review.com), and a pianist whose “attack is fully liberated” , whose solos are “well-designed outpourings” (Frank Rubolino, Cadence).
