reflects, "Looking back now, the title seems more appropriate than ever." Chris began playing guitar and writing songs as a freshman in high school. Prior to that, he'd received formal training on piano and French horn. During college at Texas A&M, he put together a band and began learning mandolin and slide guitar. They played a variety of venues and developed and enthusiastic following.
The band played only a handful of shows after the summer of 2000, however. That year he chose to go to medical school at Texas Tech rather than continuing to pursue a musical career in central and southeast Texas . "No matter how much I wanted the band to succeed, I knew that the move would bring things to a halt. It's a long drive from Lubbock to my home town of Houston ." Chris began playing solo again and his brother, Phil, accompanied him when he could. They collaborated on another album, titled "Chris and Phil Baker," in 2002. The home studio became Chris's outlet through four trying years of medical school. "Writing and recording gave me pleasure I couldn't find anywhere else."
Chris moved back to central Texas in 2004 to begin a residency in Psychiatry. Another album, "The Ride," was completed just before the move. These days, Chris is busy working on his fourth album and reestablishing a regular playing schedule. "It's been a hard road getting here. I've learned a lot about deferred gratification. But you know, for me, it's been worth it. Playing music has never felt so good."
