A resident of Costa Rica since 1992 Canadian singer/ songwriter Bruce Callow has covered a vast musical territory throughout his career. From fronting legendary Costa Rican garage rock band ANESTESIA LOCAL to performing as a soloist, Bruce has performed at small, medium and large venues throughout the country. His local hit CHUPACABRAS still rings in the ears of Costa Ricans of all ages. ( inspired by the monster vampire ET that allegedly terrorized the countryside some years ago) The countless performances in remote coffee villages and country fairs throughout the lush Costa Rican landscape have won Bruce a loyal if somewhat bemused following in his adopted homeland. His style covers a wide musical territory from rock to folk to blues and of course the deadly suped up Ranchera CHUPACABRAS. Just call it "Punk Folk " with an attitude.
Prior to relocating to Costa Rica Bruce fronted award winning Calgary power pop bands 21 HUNDREDZ and NEW INTERNATIONALISTS touring with well known acts such as the Tragically Hip, Gowan, Frozen Ghost and Meat Loaf and the Wailers. In 2002 his single PRISONER was released in Australia on the International Artist Radio Sampler CD put out by the A.I.R. (Association of Independent Record labels) and received airplay on 78 Aussie stations which set the stage for his successful 12 date Australian tour in 2003.
Two tracks from RED ALERT (by the now reunited NEW INTERNATIONALISTS) were also selected to be included on the Brisbane based GSR Records CD compilation THE TIME IS NOW.
Bruce did 11 radio and TV performances in Australia including a live performance broadcast nationally on ABC National Radio. Hear it at:
www.abc.net.au/canberra/stories/s901776.htm . Bruce travels north every year to perform, highlights have included the Canada Music Festival in Toronto, Rock Solid Pressure showcase in New York, West Hollywood club dates and the South By Southwest Festival in March 2006. Acoustic performances in Calgary with co-writer and producer Brian Winter are always a highlight in Bruce´s touring calender. His song WAITING FOR DECEMBER was released in December 2005 on the Acoustic Rainbow sampler ( Poet Man Records, US) and received airplay on 82 stations in 6 countries. See link: http://www.acousticrainbow.com/vol24.htm Songs off PRISONER have also been released on the Tea South (Canada) and Media Factory (US) labels as well as Shannon Cutt´s benefit album DREAM OF A FORGOTTEN PEOPLE. (US) http://www.netshows.us/roster.html http://teasouth.com/teaartists.php Having signed a contract with Sony Music Publishing in 1996 Bruce has worked in various mediums such as radio and television production and has collaborated with and produced several international artists based in Sweden, Canada, the US and Costa Rica.
His original material brings to mind the influences of the Who, Midnight Oil, R.E.M or U2 and the lyrics evoke strong emotions that reflect Bruces wide range of experiences and travels. His experiences in Nicaragua in the 1980's and work with Central American refugees helped consolidate a strong bond with this region and his commitment to social justice and inexpensive beer. No surprise he finds himself working the Nicaragua Desk at the British Embassy in San Jose. Rock and Roll and politics CAN mix. Apart from music, Bruce teaches ice hockey and works with Costa Rican and Nicaraguan community radio stations and hangs out with his family in Santa Ana's "Valle del Sol."
