When Mark Lewis and Andy Beaudoin began teaching at a Houston area college, the two professors of music began working on what was to become The Lewis Band. The songwriter Mark Lewis was entranced by the subtle drumming of Andy Beaudoin, whose training includes a masters in Jazz from New England Conservatory. The two first met while attending The University of Texas as Mark was finishing a doctorate in music. Next to come was finding a bass player, and the adadition of Andy Seifert, a musician with a mix of rock sensibilities and classical and jazz training.
The Lewis Band began playing an eclectic mix of original tunes at local venues in Houston. There was an immediate buzz started by the musicians and music fans alike. "They are perhaps the most original music I've heard in Houston and you have got to hear them" stated Pete Lippencott of the band Pete Simple and music coordinator on Thursdays at Helios on Westheimer. In the few months the band has been performing they have spawned the interest of recording technicians, producers, musicians and booking agents. The Lewis Band has performed on 90.1 KPFT's Pat and Rosie show several times as well as the radio program 24PM. They are regulars at Dean's, Helios, Onion Creek, The Last Concert Café and have performed all over Texas, including Dallas and Austin.
While the music is certainly pop, it fuses improvisation and funk-grooves into the texture. The songwriting is unique with a blend of neo-beatlesque zest, rock ground bass, with spicy and thick harmonies. The lyrics are a broad range of sentimental ballads to the downright zany.
