Ten Cats Laughing are acoustic duo Guy and Lisa Dicharry. Most of our music is original and played in a style which could be described as acoustic-Americana-roots-folk-country-bluegrass-eclectic. Guy plays some of the instruments and Lisa plays the other ones. As a duo we strive to make a big sound. We are mostly upbeat, occasionally quieter, and we pull material from a lot of different places. We both grew up in Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Lisa's diverse musical roots also include the music of her ancestors from Kentucky and Ohio. Guy's musical roots and influences are decidedly non-diverse and originate almost entirely in South Louisiana. We live next to the Rio Grande in Los Lunas, NM.
A little French Lesson We use the name "Ten Cats Laughing" because of Guy's grandfather, Florian Dicharry. He spoke French and English and told Guy that Dicharry in English meant "Ten Laughing Cats". Naturally, Guy believed him and told anyone who would listen. So, could "Dicharry" be a shortened form of the words that translate to "Ten Cats Laughing"? Even if it isn't, we're sticking with the story and the name.
Lisa: Guy and I started playing music together on a porch many years ago on Banks Street in New Orleans. I have spent just about a lifetime listening to amazing people play music in their own way, in their own rhyme and time. At the moment I am inspired by Alison Brown, Roscoe Holcomb, Gershwin, Alberta Hunter, Rosetta Tharpe, Ry Cooder, Edie Brickell, Leonard Bernstein, Hazel Dickens, Timbuk 3, my farm animals, Tony Joe White and many other southern roots musicians too numerous to count.
Guy: I have played and sung music all my life and have not been arrested for doing so. I listened to all of the music of South Louisiana while growing up there, including the rhythm and blues of the region. I also listened to "Sing Along with Mitch" records, Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton on television, Delta blues, folk, the Chipmunks, rock, and Cajun music. My guitar playing has been influenced by Doc Watson, George Harrison, Django Reinhardt, Eric Clapton, Jerry Reed, Mick Taylor, Freddie Green, Keith Richards, Clarence White, and every guitar player that I have tried to steal licks from. After years of guitar playing, I wanted to learn mandolin and began learning mandolin in 1999. It has 8 strings which distinguishes it as the instrument with the most strings that anyone plays in Ten Cats Laughing. My favorite songwriters include everyone who has written a song that I wish I'd written: from Stephen Foster to Stephen Sondheim, from Earl Hines to Cindy Walker, from Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg to John Lennon and Paul McCartney. For me it's music, music, music with a few breaks here and there for food, water, beer, and personal needs.
We will play music just about anywhere. Some folks say our songwriting lyrics are filled with characters who lead twisted, comic, and unpredictable lives. We mix multiple styles of music, sometimes all in one song, and are known for keeping the audience guessing. Occasionally we have special live performance "ten cat" guests including Will Dicharry (violin), Jose Armijo (bass), and Suki Kuehn (cello). And yes, we answer our phone messages: 505-269-3757
