The Sleeping Rubys could be the reverberated hum of a time that was, the dreamy shimmer of the here and now, or the delayed echo of a tomorrow waiting to reveal itself. This inconspicuous Houston band - its warm tones, sincere and honest songwriting, and understated style - is probably under your radar, off your map, and a little beyond your consciousness right now, but not for long. The Rubys have a sound that you're immediately able to recognize and completely unable to place. With equal parts roots-rock, country, and pop, their clever balance of influences and styles assures the listener that no two Rubys songs sound exactly alike. Nowhere is this more evident than in their first studio release, a five song effort entitled "E|P", released in October 2004.
The group was founded by singer-songwriters Randy Dizon and Nick Karam. Bassist Ehren Roehl and drummer Aldo Moreno round out a band whose influences - the Smiths, the Beatles, Wilco, the Jayhawks, Johnny Cash (just to name a few) - are as diverse as the band's own sound.
The Sleeping Rubys have headlined shows and supported touring acts, including the Pernice Brothers, Los Lonely Boys, Two Tons of Steel, the Fondue Monks, and the John Evans Band. They will be in Houston and on the road supporting their new album, and are also hard at work constructing (and deconstructing) a body of work that will become their first full-length album for release in early 2005.
