Katy Roberts, jazz pianist, composer and arranger, has produced 5 CD's as a leader. She was one of the 5 finalists for the Independent Music Awards Jazz category in 2005 for her composition "Carol's Caprice." She decided to study jazz piano after living and studying African music in Accra, Ghana. She was trained musically in Boston (she obtained her Bachelor of Music at Berklee College of Music and her Master of Music degree from New England Conservatory in 1985). Katy was already leading bands, playing as a sideperson and teaching at Berklee College when she moved to Paris, France in 1990. She continued playing as a sideperson, notably she was the pianist with the Ku-Umba Frank Lacy Quartet from 1992 to 2000 and frequently toured Europe with that group. She also has performed with such greats as Oliver Johnson, Rasul Siddik, Sonny Simmons and Ricky Ford, Manda Djinn and Sylvia Howard. Recently she has been performing as a duo with Ernest. K. Dawkins, the great saxophonist from Chicago's AACM. Besides that, she has always continued to compose for and perform with her own groups, from duos to her quartet, quintet and sextet.
In 2001, Katy decided to start self- producing her own quintet and septet. She has since independently released three CD's, two quintets and one septet, that have had high critical acclaim. She has taken her band along the east coast of the US, and performed regularly in Paris and other parts of France. Performances include the Maine International Film Festival, July, 2004, the Madagascar Jazz Festival, Oct., 2004, Zanzibar International Film Festival (with the group Apex), in July, 2005.
In 2006 Katy released her latest CD and performed on the east coast of the US with her quartet and Quintet this past August and September, 2006 , 2007 and 2008. She is now performing regularly in Paris and other parts of France with her group. Katy also plays balafon, an instrument she learned to play while living in Ghana.
She has just completed a new recording which includes some balafon work, and has decided to look for a label. Some but not all (5 out of 9 tracks) of the new music has just been added to her sonicbids EPK.
Meanwhile she has just co-produced Rasul Siddik's first CD as a leader, the Rasul Siddik Now! Artet which has been signed to the Philology label in Italy.
Katy will be performing in Warsaw Poland this summer in the jazz festival with her group and will be performing in various venues this coming September in New York, New Jersey, and Washington DC .
