Raised in the woods outside of Beaumont, Texas, Glenna Bell was influenced by the hymns she sung a cappella at church. Today, her songwriting reflects those origins, as well as her love for the country music she found in her parents' record collection. Often compared stylistically to Johnny Cash, with a delivery that's raw and bare boned, Glenna Bell captures the very essence of how country music was, is and should always be.
Her latest release, Face This World, reflects this revealing perspective and expression of her journey. Produced by award-winning vocalist, songwriter and musician John Evans, whose band also backed Glenna on upright bass and drums, Face This World is rooted in the past yet appeals to contemporary listeners. It is an album of work that exposes the very essence of traditional country music while invoking heartache, love and loss with a stripped down yet powerful presentation.
Aside from John Evans' singing two duets on the album and playing washboard, other guest appearances include Chris Masterson (Jack Ingram) who added guitar to several tracks, and Brian Thomas (Jesse Dayton) who made a stunning guest appearance with his banjo on "Cosmos Café."
A recent deal with Crystal Clear Distribution has placed Face This World in retail outlets across the region while her diversity is appealing to many different formats for radio including AAA, Americana and Country. May 2005 brings about a major radio, publicity and touring schedule with a slew of regional stations already featuring tracks from the album. Glenna Bell has recently introduced herself to audiences by opening for the likes of Hayes Carll, Two Tons of Steel, John Evans Band, Jane Bond and other prominent Texas acts, she is slated to embark on a Texas tour throughout the Summer months.
Everyone in the path of her music has been moved and Glenna Bell has gained the elusive respect of her fellow musicians and peers. Producer Dan Workman, whose professional credits include working with Beyonce, ZZ Top and Clay Walker, says, "Glenna Bell is the Loretta Lynn of Texas. No, that's not right, . . . she's better."
