Birthed from the depths of imagination and flamboyance, Cherokee D has developed into one of the premier spoken word artists on the scene among Houston poets. His style, is no style that can be copied or imitated. With his use of imagery and rhythmic patterns, he has quietly surfaced as a thought provoking artist who refuses to be defined.
Starting from a dare, he began to compile his emotions on paper. Finding this method of writing to be therapeutic, he exacerbated his energies on perfecting his newly discovered craft. Since 1992, Cherokee has delved into his sub-consciousness to present his inner most feeling to view. Utilizing his pains and his pleasures, his work is a written testimony of his life experiences.
After attending an open-mic spoken word show for a solid three months, he finally garnered the nerve to approach the microphone. Harlon's Bar-B-Que served as a catalyst for what would soon become a new era for the developing artist. With the first presentation of "Ghetto Fabulous" receiving a less than favorable reception, D questioned his abilities to prosper in the art form. However, as with many crowd pleasers, his sophomore effort would reassure him that his skills are indeed worthy of recognition.
Arising from accepted uncertainty and misguided obscurity, Cherokee D has immersed himself into the heart & soul of operations at virtually every event. As an executive member of The Poets Collective of the Sports Box Lounge and one of the regular hosts of the weekly open-mic show, Cherokee worked to perfect his "ghetto" style. When asked to participate in The Bad Boys of Poetry Show, he willingly accepted the challenge by bringing his trademarks: a cane and a bicycle.
Never one to be ordinary, he has brought an element to spoken word that cannot be reproduced. Of the many performances that he has staged, The Gathering, The Pop-Up Poetry Spot, The Love Jones SHow (in Lake Charles, LA), and in the Spotlight with Cuz & Company are but a few. He also opened and co-hosted The Heavy Rhymes Experience in the fall of 2001. D has also served a co-producer of the compilation CD, Live at the Poets Collective in 2003, as well as being one of the 11 poets featured on the work.
Cherokee has been a featured poet at countless poetry shows all over the great state of Texas. Being a featured poet on a number of web sites, the most notable is the Spokenwordz.com site. These performances have made him the recipient of several awards, of which he is most proud of the 2001 Most Dedicated Poet and the 2002 Most Eccentric Words both presented by Renaissance Entertainment.
From "What My Dreams Have Become" to "Gun Show" , D has wowed audiences whenever he approaches a stage. His latest project entitled "Pimpin' Poetry Ain't Easy", is a CD that contains a variety of crowd favorites. Displaying his diversity, D flexes his "muscles" with such pieces as "Eye of An Artist" and "Insecurities". The ever popular "Blue Poetry" and "Can I See You TOnight" add to the aesthetic masterpiece that highlights his most promising work to date.
"Pimpin' Poetry Ain't Easy" features a number of the friends he has met on the scene. From vocal assistance by Deep Blu See, Imperial, and Indigo to production assistance from Jaguar Productions, Sokratis, and the Funky Negro, Cherokee spares no expense proving that he is certainly one of Houston's premier entertainers.
